Hello everyone, I have a grammar question with regard to the usage of explanation. I don´t know if the proper preposition to be used after "explanation" is about or on . My guess , is on is more informal than about but I would like to hear from natives Thank you very much for your explanation...

To me "explanation why" seems like an abbreviated version of "explanation as to why", but I would like to know if either is more correct, or both are incorrect in the strictest sense.
