Two dead bodies were found deep within a large banyan tree that toppled over in Hilo earlier this month, Hawaii officials confirmed to SFGATE.

Hawaii Island police recovered the remains of two women Sunday from within the debris of a downed banyan tree on Kilauea Avenue in Hilo. Crews from the Hawaii County Department of Public Works, a county-contracted tree trimming company, and Hawaii Fire Department spent several hours cutting away large branches to allow access to the victims.
