Southwest Airlines will launch assigned seating in January amidst implementation of extra fees, legroom changes and boarding process changes.

The airline is putting an end to its open-seating policy, it announced, describing the move as "an important step in our evolution."

Southwest first announced the change last summer, where they said they will switch to assigned seating for the first time in the airline’s history.
