Despite having a record below .500, the Texas Rangers had some bright spots — namely, the pitching and some recent success at the plate.
WFAA is keeping track of who the Rangers pick. Their first pick is slotted at No. 12 overall, which is expected to be made at 6:05 p.m. CT on Sunday, according to the team. The No. 52 pick is expected at 8:15 p.m. CT, and the Rangers' final pick of night one (No. 84) should happen at about 8:45 p.m. CT.
On Sunday, Gavin Fien and Kayson Cunningham were selected in the first round of the MLB draft. Fien, an infielder from California, went to the Texas Rangers with the 12th overall pick. Cunningham, a shortstop from San Antonio, was taken six picks later by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Both are Longhorns recruits.
The first seven innings had looked all too familiar for the Rangers. When they were given a great opportunity by the Tigers on a missed tag in the baselines and a throwing error in the third, giving them runners on the corners and one out, Josh Smith swung at a 3-0 pitch at the top of the zone for a pop-up. The inning died on a Seager strikeout.
