WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI - Radon, an odorless gas that’s the leading cause of lung cancer for non-smokers in the U.S., is also commonly found at high levels inside Washtenaw County homes, officials say.

In Colorado, as of 2025, about 500 people a year die from lung cancer as the result of radon gas exposure. Nationally, the number of lung cancer deaths attributed to radon is about 21,000 per year.

Many schools don’t know whether students are being exposed to the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S., according to a memo published by the state auditor’s office.
