A fire engulfed a newly opened shopping center in eastern Iraq, killing more than 60 people, including children, Iraqi officials said Thursday.

Fire crew were assessing the scene of a massive fire in a hypermarket in al-Kut city in eastern Iraq, which has left dozens dead.

While the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, officials blamed a lack of safety standards in the building for the scale of the tragedy.
