Mule deer are “picky” eaters. They are browsers, which means they eat leaves, stems, and buds from shrubs and trees — in contrast to grazers that primarily eat grasses and forbs. In fall and winter, up to 90% of a deer’s diet may be shrubs like mountain mahogany, sagebrush, bitterbrush, quaking aspen, and chokecherry.
