Pruning requirements vary depending on the age of your rose. If pruned properly, your rose bush will look significantly smaller and bare, with the growth strengthening and re-establishing quickly in the spring. Try to create a rounded shape to the shrub as you go. Don’t worry about where you cut a stem. For newly planted shrubs: 1. Cut back all stems to a height of 12-18” (30-45cm) from ground level. 2. Remove any remaining foliage. 3. Dispose of all cuttings in garden waste. | David Austin Rose

Pruning gives you the chance to shape your climbing roses, ensuring a balanced, attractive form while promoting an abundance of blooms from top to bottom. With the right approach, your roses will remain healthy and grow into a well-structured plant. Climbing roses have long, flexible stems that require both training and pruning to produce blooms all over. Focus on encouraging strong growth from the base and training the stems to fan out horizontally along walls or fences. This technique promotes

However, it is still a good idea to keep your rambling rose under control, by trimming it back every few years to help give shape to your rose. Here’s Head Gardener Steve to tell you more! #DavidAustinRoseCare | David Austin Roses

Watch our informative video where one of our rose experts demonstrates the art of training and pruning a repeat-flowering climbing rose! When pruning climbers, focus on two key aspects: first, select and nurture strong growth from the plant's base. Second, train stems to fan out, positioning them nearly horizontal to encourage new shoots along the stem. This method ensures healthy and vigorous growth. If your climbing rose is in its first year, it's still in the crucial stage of root establishme
