L53 is our fully restored Manchester 1880's built horse tram - with a unique trick! Designed by John Eades, the entire body of the tramcar rotates on its chassis on a turntable built into the frame. This meant the tramcar body was lighter, only needing one staircase, which reduced the weight the horses had to pull. It also meant that the horses didn't need to be disconnected from the tramcar at the terminus - with an adept crew, it is said a tram could be turned and ready to go back the other wa
