This was especially true when encountering deep snow when a hunter tracks a moose that is itself in soft deep snow up to its belly. The snowshoe evenly spreads out the weight of the hunter/traveler keeping them buoyant above the deep snow. This Athabascan baby carrier is made from Birch bark, willow root, glass beads and moose hide. Mothers wear these traditionally, carrying the baby so that mom can have her hands free for berry picking etc...
